How Trauma lives in the Body

How Trauma Lives in the Body: A Cellular Story

When we think of trauma, we often think of memories—moments frozen in time that we wish we could forget. But trauma doesn’t just live in our minds. It imprints itself into our very cells. It becomes part of the story our bodies tell, long after the events have passed.

I’ve walked this path myself. And I’ve worked with many who have, too. What I’ve learned—both through personal healing and professional work—is that trauma isn’t just something we remember. It’s something we carry.

The Body Remembers

When we experience trauma, our nervous system goes into overdrive. Fight, flight, freeze—or even fawn—kicks in. These are ancient survival mechanisms, and they’re powerful. But what happens when the danger passes and the body never fully gets the message that we’re safe?

That’s where things get stuck.

On a cellular level, trauma can change the way our bodies function. Research has shown that trauma affects immune function, hormone regulation, digestion, and even gene expression. Our cells literally adapt to survive ongoing stress—but those adaptations can keep us in a state of chronic imbalance.

It’s Not “Just in Your Head”

One of the most damaging things trauma survivors hear is that they should “just move on” or “get over it.” But trauma affects our physiology. It shows up as fatigue, inflammation, chronic pain, brain fog, digestive issues, anxiety—and the list goes on.

The body stores unprocessed emotions and stress patterns in tissues, organs, and the fascia. That tightness in your chest, the stomach drop when you’re triggered, the tension in your shoulders—these aren’t random. They’re clues. They’re messages.

Healing is Possible

The good news? Our bodies are also incredibly wise and resilient. Just as trauma reshapes us, healing can, too. With the right support and practices, the nervous system can begin to regulate. The cells can re-learn what safety feels like.

This kind of healing isn’t linear, and it’s not always easy. But it’s deeply, profoundly possible. And it doesn’t have to happen all at once. Each moment of presence, each breath, each act of kindness toward your body—these are steps toward repair.

You’re Not Broken

If you take one thing from this post, let it be this: you are not broken. Your body did exactly what it needed to do to survive. Now, you get to give it what it needs to heal.

Wherever you are on your journey, I see you. I honor your resilience. And I believe in your capacity to heal—right down to the cellular level.
